Purging
What is purging?
Purging involves engaging in behaviors to eliminate food from the body after eating, commonly through self-induced vomiting or the use of laxatives. Purging is a common eating disordered behavior and is always present in a bulimia nervosa diagnosis. Purging behaviors are also used to decrease feelings of fullness, or to achieve a feeling of "emptiness" that relieves anxiety related to fear of weight gain.
What are the health consequences of purging?
Purging can severely impact physical health, leading to electrolyte imbalances, acid reflux, and damage to the digestive system, among other negative health impacts.
