The Athlete's Body Remembers: Treating Eating Disorders Shaped by a Lifetime of Performance Culture

Kate Craigen, PhD, CEDS-C (She/Her)
For individuals with a history of athletic involvement, lifelong exposure to performance culture - including expectations around discipline, body composition, and achievement - can contribute to the development or persistence of disordered eating behaviors later in life.
This session will explore the role of sports history and athletic identity in shaping eating disorder risk in midlife athletes and former athletes. Participants will examine how athletic performance culture can be integrated into case conceptualization and treatment planning, while also identifying practical strategies for supporting recovery by addressing athletic identity, body image, and performance-related beliefs within treatment.
Ask the Experts: Part II - Navigating Resistance in Eating Disorder Treatment

.webp)
Sarah Lewandowski, MA, LPC, CEDS-C (She/Her)
Eating disorders are complex mental illness that often make treatment and recovery multifaceted and non-linear. One significant dynamic within the treatment process is resistance - a common, yet often misunderstood element of care. While resistance can feel uncomfortable for the client, caregiver and clinician, it can also function as a protective mechanism. Recognizing that resistance is not simply denial or defiance, but a potential signal of underlying fear, ambivalence, and/or unmet needs is crucial. While both motivation and resistance naturally ebb and flow throughout treatment, it is in these moments that opportunities for insight, empathy and therapeutic alliance can emerge. This topic explores how clinicians, caregivers and individuals living with eating disorders perceive and respond to resistance. By understanding the function of resistance and addressing it with curiosity rather than confrontation, care teams can foster a more compassionate and effective treatment environment.
Why Traditional Eating Disorder Treatment Fails LGBTQ+ Populations and How Queer Worldmaking Offers a Better Path Forward

Traditional eating disorder (ED) treatment models are often built upon heteronormative and cisnormative foundations that can inadvertently pathologize or erase the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. This one-hour introductory session explores Queer Worldmaking, a conceptual framework for reimagining recovery beyond standard medicalized milestones. Participants will examine how systemic biases impact treatment outcomes and learn how to shift their clinical orientation to better support gender-expansive and queer clients. The session provides a foundational understanding of how to co-create affirming therapeutic "worlds" that prioritize autonomy and belonging over normative compliance.
