Balancing eating disorder recovery during the back-to-school season is possible and can be managed effectively with the right resources and strategies. Many students are gearing up to head back to school or have already made it through their first day. For those struggling with an eating disorder, this season can bring a slew of excitement along with inevitable stressors.
Here are some back-to-school tips that we hope will help you or your loved one to navigate the halls of this new school year, while supporting eating disorder recovery.
Establish a support system through trust and education
Building a strong support system is essential for students in eating disorder recovery, especially if they’re away from home for the first time. Support can come from friends, family, and mental health professionals both on campus and at home who understand the nuances of recovery and offer empathetic, informed help.
Educating trusted peers about eating disorders and mental health can foster a more supportive campus environment. Friends and family should also be encouraged to learn about these challenges to better support their loved ones in eating disorder recovery. Connecting with campus resources like counseling services and support groups can provide additional professional guidance and reduce feelings of isolation.
Advocating for mental health awareness and creating open dialogue helps reduce stigma and encourages others to seek help. By sharing their experiences and supporting others, students can enhance their own recovery and contribute to a culture of empathy on campus, which can benefit everyone.
Develop a routine to reduce stress
Creating a structured daily routine is crucial for students, especially those recovering from eating disorders. A consistent schedule that includes regular meals and snacks helps stabilize metabolism and reduce anxiety related to food choices. Planning meals in advance can prevent disordered eating behaviors.
Incorporating self-care and relaxation into daily routines is also essential. Setting aside time for hobbies, physical activities, and rest helps create a sense of stability and control, benefiting both physical and emotional well-being.
Effective stress management is vital for maintaining eating disorder recovery and overall mental health. Techniques such as meditation, yoga, and deep-breathing exercises can reduce stress and promote calm. By being mindful of emotional triggers and employing healthy coping strategies, students can stay grounded, enhance emotional resilience, and prevent relapse.
Know that it's ok to face challenges during eating disorder recovery
Acknowledging that recovery can be challenging is important, and seeking support is a normal part of the process.
We know that recovery is a process that does not end when clients leave our care. We’ve recently refreshed our alumni virtual support groups that help past clients stay connected to our programs and to other people who understand what it’s like to recover from an eating disorder. Our virtual support groups are open to individuals 18 and older who have received treatment at any of our programs. Learn about our virtual eating disorder support groups.
